David Bowie album cover

This is a project that I originally did in early 2015. The assignment was to choose an existing album and redesign its cover as a gatefold double-LP album. I chose David Bowie’s iconic 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, one of my all-time favorite albums. After Bowie’s untimely passing on January 10, 2016, I felt inspired to revisit the project.

The original 1972 cover artwork for the album is iconic and irreplaceable, but on a glance seems to have little to do with the vibrant science-fiction backstory that Bowie wrote to inspire his lyrics. The story is about Ziggy Stardust, a hedonistic alien rock star who comes to earth in its final years to use rock ’n’ roll music to foretell to the children of earth the coming of the infinite Starman.

This inspired me to use a childlike “craft” look that included a papier-mâché globe, a felt “outer space” background, a foil-covered toilet paper roll rocketship, and the title of album drawn with a Crayola crayon.

The lyrics printed on the inside of the album were a great exercise in microtypography.

On the inside of the gatefold, the Starman, cut out from felt, is suspended in space above the papier-mâché earth.
