Snow Falling on Cedars poster

This assignment was to create a play poster for the play Snow Falling on Cedars. It’s based on a 1994 novel by David Guterson that was made into a well-received movie in 1999. It tells the story of a man found dead in the water in a Pacific Northwest fishing community and, much like To Kill a Mockingbird carries themes of justice and racism.

A major feature of the story is the forced internment of Japanese-American people during World War II, and the effects that the internment had on the particular community featured in the story. As a textural element of the poster, I incorporate glimpses of the original exclusion order issued by the U.S. government.

I took inspiration from the somewhat abstract style of DVD and Blu-ray disc covers by the Criterion Collection. The main component of the poster is straight-down photos of water and of a hardwood floor, representing the watery scene where the fisherman’s body is found at the beginning of the story and the courtroom floor where the circumstances of his death are debated, as a Japanese-American man is accused of the fisherman’s murder.
